HISTORY OF JOHN DEERE
Deere was born in 1804 in Rutland, Vermont. His father was lost at sea when he was four years old, Deere was raised by his mother. As he grew up, he was known for his workmanship and ingenuity as a blacksmith. In 1836 he followed the Vermonters to Illinois where he established a blacksmith shop in Grand Detour.
Deere learned from his farmer customers that they commonly used cast-iron plows of the day and that performed poorly in the sticky soil of the prairie causing the farmers to stop often to scrape off the dirt every few feet. The need for a self-scouring plow was great.
Convinced that a highly polished smooth plow would shed off the sticky soil, Deere made his first plow using steel from a broken sawblade. It was not long before manufacturing plows became Deere's identity and business.
